Hey guys I was doing some research and came up with some negative aspects to live music experiences, maybe something we had not though about?
Check this article out…Its rad.
Risks of developing noise-induced hearing loss in employees of urban music clubs
Noise-induced hearing loss has previously been reported among rock musicians. This study sought to determine whether a hazard of noise-induced hearing loss exists for music club employees other than musicians themselves. Sound levels at eight live-music clubs were measured and symptoms of noise exposure in 31 music club employees were assessed by questionnaire. The average sound level at the various clubs during performances ranged from 94.9 to 106.7 dBA. The overall sound level average, including both performance and ambient levels, ranged from 91.9 to 99.8 dBA. Symptoms of noise exposure, such as tinnitus and subjective hearing loss, correlated with sound intensity. Only 16% reported regular use of hearing protection. We conclude that employees of music clubs are at substantial risk of developing Noise-Induced Hearing Loss, due to chronic noise exposure which consistently exceeded safe levels. Hearing protection is used much too infrequently. The development of hearing conservation programs for this large group of workers is essential.

I think that there are many other negative effects of live music. I haven’t really done much research surrounding this however I observerd first hand on Saturday night the negative effects of all age shows. Walking towards the entrance my friends and I saw a group of young guys and girls surrounded by a few security guards. These girls were extremely intoxicated and could barely stay standing. They were wearing nearly nothing and were exposing their bodies to the public. The security guards were explaining to the group that the drunk girls were not getting into the concert and that they needed to call their parents. A few of the young kids did not seem intoxicated and were becoming aggressive and loud at the fact that they were unable to go in. While this may not be a direct negative effect of live gigs, it demonstrates the behaviour of some fans.

I agree Jess,
I think that there is significant evidence to prove the correlation of drugs, alchol with live music. It is as though some people need to experience the ‘complete’ live experience, which includes taking coipious anmounts of drugs/alcohol.
We (our band) play many ‘all ages’ shows and have had many instances where a show has ended sourly because of intoxication, rage or similar violent situations stemming from substance abuse.
On the other hand, there is a strong move by this generation (more than others) to embrace a ‘drug free’ lifestyle. I don’t know if you guys are familar with the social phenomonon that is ‘Straight Edge’. but it is an extremely prevalent movement, especially within our genre of music, and many of my friends identify themeselves as ‘Straight Edge’.
I will post an article in the main forum, blog area.
Peace.
